YRC to Merge Yellow, Roadway Into New Unit
Less-than-truckload carrier YRC Worldwide, formerly Yellow Roadway Corp., said Monday it will merge its Yellow Transportation and Roadway units in an effort to save money. The company said Roadway President Mike Smid will head the combined unit, to be called YRC National Transportation. Yellow Transportation President James Welch will retire at the end of this month, the company said. Smid will be succeeded as president of Roadway by Terry Gilbert, who was executive vice president of sales and marketing for Roadway. Welch will be succeeded by Maynard Skarka, who was senior vice president of operations for Yellow Transportation. The move comes just a week after YRC said it was folding its USF Bestway unit into its USF Reddaway subsidiary. YRC Worldwide Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Bill Zollars also said the company had created YRC Enterprise Solutions Group, to serve customers with transportation and logistics services. That unit will be led by Greg Reid. Yellow and Roadway Corp. merged in 2003 to form Yellow Roadway Corp., which was renamed YRC Worldwide at the beginning of last year. YRC Worldwide is ranked No. 3 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of North American for-hire carriers. By Transport Topics
